teamLab Planets TOKYO: A Complete Guide to the Immersive Water Museum

teamLab Planets is an “immersive” museum located in Toyosu, Tokyo, where visitors walk through water and gardens. Based on the concept of “Body Immersive,” the boundary between the viewer and the work of art becomes blurred as you become part of the installation itself.

1. Major Areas & Highlights

The museum is divided into two main sections: the Water Area and the Garden Area.

The Water Area

  • The Infinite Crystal Universe: A mirrored space filled with countless points of light that extend infinitely in all directions. You can use the teamLab smartphone app to interact with the lights, changing the environment in real-time.
  • Drawing on the Water Surface Created by the Dance of Koi and People: Visitors walk knee-deep in water where digital koi fish swim around them. If a fish strikes a person, it turns into a flower and scatters—a unique moment that will never be repeated.
  • Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers: Seasonal flowers bloom and scatter throughout a massive dome. It creates a powerful sense of floating as you feel yourself dissolving into the floral universe.

The Garden Area

  • Floating Flower Garden: A space featuring over 13,000 living orchids suspended from the ceiling. As you approach, the flowers rise to create a space for you, allowing you to be completely enveloped by nature.
  • Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms: An outdoor garden of moss filled with ovoid sculptures. These “ovoids” change their light and sound when pushed by people or blown by the wind.
